Week three blog.
Despite having no tutorial or lecture this week, I thought the material posted on the unit's facebook site was quite interesting and provided a good idea about the future of education. It seems as though the traditional method of learning through imparting knowledge is disappearing. While the ability to process and use information is becoming much more valuable. This idea was put forward in an article titled 'What you (really) need to know' by Lawrence H. Summers, a former president of Harvard University.
Summers' thoughts are well supported by Steve Wheeler's article, 'Bear Pit Pedagogy'. Wheeler is an associate professor at Plymouth University, and shares a very similar view to Summers. He believes that students should be encouraged to 'extend their knowledge' by adding their own additional content. Wheeler also states that students should be encouraged to develop something known as a personal/ professional learning network (PLN). A student's PLN is designed to help them utilise and share other peoples information that already exists.
There is definately a change occuring in the way people are learning as well as the teaching methods which are being used. This SCP12 unit is a prime example. I believe it is an exciting and interesting change, andI look forward to seeing the continuous evolution.
